Rogue River Redux May 19, 2012

Another trip down the Upper Rogue River. Was looking forward to the Crystal and Platte River trips for a long time, but I cancelled them due to the wife's surgery- didn't want to be out of town for 3 days, even though she gave me permission to go. So a trip down the Rogue was the other option since it is so close to home.
Warm day, lower 80's, sunny all day. A large group this time. Lots of other kayakers, too, along with a few fishermen.
Melissa and Matt joined me on this trip.
Fallen trees still were there, creating a bit of a challenge.

Everyone made it under or around with no problems. Second downed tree wasn't quite as easy. Water level was lower than last month, so it was a little more difficult. Several people portaged around it, others went over the lower logs with help from a couple of guys standing on the branches and giving the kayaks a boost as they went over it.
River is large enough to be able to spread out, and not have to worry about being crowded.

Very pleasant trip, about 12 miles and 3 hours including a break at 131. And very relaxing after a trying week at work.
Note to self- check camera battery before leaving.

An 8 mile trip today.  34.5 miles total year to date.

Manistee River May 5, 2012

A trip down the Pine River was cancelled due to 5'' of rain and a lot downed trees and floating logs. It was decided to do the Manistee River instead.
The Manistee is a much larger river, and with the Hodenpyl dam controlling the flow, not nearly as high. The current was strong, though, keeping everyone on their toes.
It was a little cool at the beginning, and although it threatened to rain several times, it was a dry day.
Thirteen kayakers showed up for a nice float.

The entire length from Hodenpyl Dam to Red Bridge is through national forest land, so there are no houses or roads to be seen, making for a wonderful and quiet trip.

The sun did come out near the end of the trip, and the temperature warmed up nicely. Another wonderful day on the river.
11.5 miles total. Year to date- 26.5 miles
