UP Trip 2013 - Day 1

Lake Superior/Grand Island July 29, 2013

The end of July brought our annual trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Sally and I were the only ones from last year who were able to make it again this year. We rode up together Monday morning to the campground in Munising, Mi. and arrived about 3:30. We met friends Brian, Dennis, Jim and Julie, and several other couples there hoping to be able to paddle to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
After setting up our tents we said hello to our friends we had not seen in a while and met some other paddlers who were there. We ate a quick dinner, then Dennis, Sally and I decided to take a warm-up paddle to Grand Island just about 1/2 mile off shore from our campground.
The lake was very calm, and the paddling was easy as we set off about 6:30.
Sally taking the lead as we paddle toward Grand Island.
Dennis trying out his new Necky Elias kayak.
Grand Island has only a few homes on it. Everything  must be brought over by ferry.
There are several campgrounds on the island. Maybe next year we will stay at one of these.

We paddled slowly getting warmed up for the paddle to Pictured Rocks. The weather looked good as we paddled back. Jim and Juli weren't as lucky the prior week as a storm came up before they were able to get back to the mainland. They made it back without problems, but became very concerned as the lake whipped up waves that were larger than they were used to paddling in since most of their kayaking has been done on rivers.
We made it back by shortly after 8:00 as the sun was going down.
The sun setting as we sat at a campfire at Ted and Deb's campsite right on the water. We will need to reserve a spot earlier next year so we can get one on the beach.

A beautiful sunset over Lake Superior to end the day. Looks like it is going to be a good week.
Miles paddled today: 3 miles. Year-to-date:154.1
