Day 2: Pine River - Sportsman Drive to Silver Creek Campground
Thursday evening and Friday morning brought more kayakers to the Rendezvous. There were several options again on which rivers to paddle. The organizers scheduled a float down the Big Manistee River, a river they paddle every year. Several start times were offered due to the number of kayakers and canoeists present this year.
Brian planned to take our group down the Pine River in three sections. Friday's trip was from Sportsman Drive at the end of Five Mile Road to Silver Creek Campground. It is a stretch we had done in August last year, and I was anxious to do it again.
Ten of us shuttled from the campground to the put in. Again we were treated to a wonderful sunny day and temps in the upper 60's to low70's.
This section starts out narrow with a swift current. The riverbed varies from gravel to large rocks to clay.
Because of Tippy Dam downstream there are no salmonin this river, so there were few fisherman to avoid.
Several areas of riffles and small rapids kept us on our toes, and sweepers and strainers
A stop for lunch at a park along Skookum Road.
Approaching the take out at Silver Springs. Days like this make it a lot easier to deal with the stresses of real life.
Miles paddled today: 10.8. Year to date: 233.9.
